With the recent recalls of many toys, safety is on our minds this holiday season. How do you pick a safe and appropriate toy for the kids (and adults) on your list? Worries about toxic levels of lead paint, removable pieces and other chemicals are certainly something to be concerned about.

One important factor to keep in mind when shopping is age-appropriate toys. There can be thousands of toys to choose from in one store, and it’s important to choose the right toy for the right aged child. Toys that are meant for older children can be dangerous for younger children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has a website listing every recalled toy, from the most recent all the way back to 1975, requires toy manufacturers to meet stringent safety standards and to label certain toys that could be a hazard for younger children. Toys should be developmentally appropriate to suit the skills, abilities and interests of the child.
