Russell Hyken, Educational licensed psychotherapist, discusses what to do when your teen asks
for a tattoo.

Since tattoos are much more mainstream now than even a few years ago, it’s a relevant and important subject parents should be prepared to discuss openly.   With tattoo images prevalent among peers and superstars, how can a parent manage what may seem like an act of teen rebellion?
Hyken gave the following advice for parents whose teen wants a “tatt”:

Good parenting requires a discussion—not an argument.
Be ready to listen to their rationale.

Your goal is to ensure your teenager understands the decision
and the long-term consequences.

Set up a time to talk specifically about the request with your teen;
begin by addressing safety issues.

Discuss social implications and tattoo placement.

Ask your teenager why she wants a permanent mark on her body.
This can provide important insight into your child’s inner world.
